A wireless network, in the context of computers, generally means connection between computers typically using invisible radio waves and not conventional wires and cables. 

Wireless networks are open to the public and isolated within individual organisations to connect other wireless enabled devices such as portable laptop computers, mobile phones or hand held equipment (e.g. palm devices).  

The requirements to establish a wireless network are compatible software and a hub or router – both devices to receive and transmit the signals between the connecting computers and other computer systems such as telephone networks or the world wide web. 

An important consideration is how to protect such a network from unauthorised intrusion by ensuring security with software specifically designed for this task.

As intrusive threats evolve constantly, so preventative software needs to be updated regularly.

A wifi hotspot, location or access point is a point of access to wireless broadband for wireless enabled devices. A wide range of locations including airports. libraries, coffee shops and many other places now have wireless access points frequently used for connection to the internet.
