Broadband
Back to Knowledge BaseBroadband allows the transmission of information between computers, e.g. accessing information from the Internet and sending updated files to computers that are a part of the world wide web (as the internet network is known).
It is roughly divided into two main types – assymetric digital subscriber line, or ADSL as it is more commonly known, and cable broadband.
ADSL uses the telephone network for sending and receiving signals alongside the telephone transmission. Cable uses the television cable network structure for the same purpose.
In both cases receiving information transmitted from a computer hosting a website (downloading) is considerably faster than sending information to that same computer (uploading).
ADSL broadband is available at home for the majority of computer owners and replaces the slower ‘dial up’ technology.
CMC IT supplies advice and the equipment necessary to take advantage of the time saving speed gains that broadband brings to the internet user.
TIPS
Broadband suppliers offer various levels of contract according to estimated usage. Check that your chosen broadband supplier can meet your needs and that there is a good level of support with a help service easily available if and when you require it.
