Backing Up Your Data

Back to Knowledge Base

In addition to damage caused by security threats such as viral activity and theft, the data files stored on a computer can be lost if there is a failure or damage to the machine itself.

For this reason it is vital that the vulnerable files are protected by duplicating them and, if possible, maintaining up-to-date copies, ideally at a separate storage location.

The working data files are mostly stored on the computer's main storage equipment, the 'hard drive', which can suddenly stop functioning or 'crash', making the files difficult and sometimes impossible to access.

The process of duplicating files to secure them is called 'backing up' data.

CMC IT can advise you and supply the additional equipment you need to back up your precious data files. The process can even be set up to function automatically in the background whilst you are working normally with your computer.

TIPS

Decide how much space you will need for your files now and in the future.

Backing up your files to an external disk alongside your computer may not prevent loss by fire and theft.

Seek advice on whether your backing up process should operate automatically and what it can achieve for you.
