Broadband
Broadband is a method of connecting your computer to the Internet. It is called broadband as it provides a high-speed Internet connection when compared with older methods of connecting which were generally termed narrowband or dial up.
It is roughly divided into two main types – asymmetric digital subscriber line, or ADSL as it is more commonly known, and cable broadband. ADSL uses the telephone network, sending and receiving signals alongside the telephone transmission. It is estimated to be available to 99.9% of premises in the UK. Cable uses the television cable network structure.
In both cases receiving information transmitted from a computer such as a web host computer (downloading) is considerably quicker than sending information back to that same computer (uploading).
With a broadband internet connection, loading web pages and downloading e mails happen much more quickly than with dial-up! You will be able to do many things at once with broadband. It is even fast enough to allow several people to use the same Internet connection at the same time, if there is more than one computer and they are networked together.
The first step to getting broadband is to see what is available at your location.
